Most internists are aware of the postmenopausal osteoporosis syndrome, and deal at one time or another with the resulting problems of pain, disability, and death caused by fractures, especially those of the spine and hip. However, many of the recent advances in understanding the pathogenesis and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis are described in a widely scattered literature that is difficult to assimilate. I do not intend to give a clinical review of osteoporosis, but to highlight new information in noninvasive measurement of bone mineral density, the elucidation of risk factors for osteoporosis, and updated concepts in the treatment and prevention
