To the editor: In his letter, Battigelli (2) misrepresented our results on chronic lung disease in cotton textile workers (1), and has made only unsubstantiated criticisms of our study.
He characterized our cotton textile worker cohort as deficient because about half of the target population was seen. In fact, this proportion is not surprising because 18 to 27 years had elapsed from the time of the entry criteria for work in the mills to the initial study in 1973. Those patients studied represent active and retired workers with long-term employment in the mills who were still living in the Columbia,
