From a former desperate dearth in the field have sprung several brief books on nephrology that are excellent for students, house staff, beginning fellows, or those with just an interest in nephrology. I have had a few favorites that I have recommended to students, but I shall exchange them for this thoughtful book, carefully prepared by the Northwestern Nephrology Group. The tone is set by a frontispiece showing urinary sediment, followed by approaches to disease via the patient, which is the way every clinician first sees it.
