In 1978 we published a paper reporting three cases of cardiomyopathy associated with hypophosphatemia (1). In 1980 we published a paper reporting seven cases of mitral valve prolapse associated with ophthalmoplegia and other neurologic findings (2). In letters to the editor, authors on these papers have raised questions as to their validity; these letters (3, 4) appear in this issue on page 275, with responses (5) from Dr. John R.
