As the editors state in their introduction, this is essentially a new book made necessary by the burgeoning development in the field of diabetes over the last decade. Basic physiology and metabolism are well summarized and our knowledge of insulin action is expanded in the first few sections. A series of reviews on hormonal and neural interactions in diabetes that follows is the best to be found anywhere. The thoroughness and clarity of the sections on genetic, autoimmune, and viral factors in the pathogenesis of type I diabetes are also commendable.
