How can physicians be prepared to fulfill the healthcare needs of older persons in the community, in the hospital, and in the long-term care institution? The Executive Council of the Association of American Medical Colleges has recently published a set of guidelines by which medical colleges can measure their educational efforts in geriatric medicine (1). These guidelines represent the wisdom of persons representing "... almost 90 percent of the nation's academic medical centers" (1) and provide an outline of the breadth of issues and domains of knowledge relevant to care of the elderly.
