The 1970S were characterized by an abundance of publications on research in iron metabolism, a flow that has continued virtually unabated up to the present. The devotee of this complex field has been treated to symposia, numerous reports in journals, and a major new book by Bothwell, Charlton, Finch, and Cook. These products have been informative, provocative, and sometimes dazzling. With this bountiful literature, is there a need for a new book? Is there a medical readership not served by the currently available literature? My answer is "Yes, but . . .," which is a clue to what I think
