Rapid advancements are being made in hepatology, not only in viral hepatitis but also in hepatic collagen metabolism; immunology; chemical and drug toxicity; biliary function and metabolism; and radiologic, ultrasonographic, and endoscopic procedures. Ten years ago, a single reference text, some clinical textbooks, and a few monographs existed. Hepatology's coming-of-age as a clinical discipline has created the need to review, consolidate, and integrate information for broader clinical use. Thus, we have the increasing number of new texts.
