American geriatric medicine has come of age only within the last decade, and the need for a scholarly, reasonably comprehensive reference on geriatrics has been apparent to all who deal with students, resident physicians, and established practitioners, most of whom regard geriatric medicine as a simple-minded extension of internal medicine. Such an ideal text should show the distinctions between physiologic and pathologic aging, discuss critically the major diseases and problems that affect the elderly, and outline the principles and practices of longterm care. To do less would jeopardize the credibility of this evolving and still rather inarticulate discipline.
