To the editor: I am surprised by the editorial review that allowed publication of the letter by Marks and colleagues (1).
The letter is unoriginal and out of date. Despite the claim that no reference to this method could be found in the biomedical literature, a very similar letter has been published (2). Perhaps more important is the trend of promotion committees to look at the impact of work through the use of citation analysis. A more effective chain letter is currently making the rounds.
