Recently an outbreak of Kaposi's sarcoma and opportunistic infections including Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia has been reported in homosexual men, intravenous drug abusers, Haitian immigrants, and hemophiliacs (1). This acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is characterized by lymphopenia, impaired T lymphocyte function, and reversal of helper (OKT4) to suppressor (OKT8) lymphocyte subpopulations. Patients in implicated risk groups with unexplained symptoms such as persistent lymphadenopathy and diarrhea, fever, or progressive weight loss have complexes related to the syndrome (2).
Isoprinosine is a synthetic molecular complex formed from inosine and the p-acetamidobenzoic acid salt of N,N-dimethyl amino-2 propanol in a 1 to 3 molar ratio.
