The Paperback Romance is one of the largest selling categories of fiction. The protagonist is usually a beautiful young woman, relatively alone in the world and long suffering, who falls in love early in the novel with a mysterious man with whom a passionate encounter will invariably occur after long anticipation. The amorous coupling, however, is seldom accomplished on the concrete floor of a pathology laboratory in a hospital owned and operated by the chief character.
