The practice of gastroenterology has changed dramatically in the past 10 years. Today's gastroenterologist routinely uses diagnostic and therapeutic methods such as computed tomography, colonoscopy, and H2-receptor blocking agents that were unavailable in the early 1970s. The practicing clinician, bewildered by the rapid proliferation and sometimes indiscriminate use of these new methods, may welcome a text that reviews clinical gastroenterology in a practical way. Such is the stated intent of this book; unfortunately, it falls short of that ambitious goal.
