Five years ago the Canadian Task Force on the Periodic Health Examination (1) recommended that the annual physical checkup be replaced by a lifetime program of "health protection packages." Certain history items, physical examinations, laboratory tests, immunizations, and counseling procedures were recommended according to the age, sex, and risk category of each patient. To develop its recommendations, the Task Force reviewed 128 different medical conditions and searched the literature for evidence that such conditions should be sought during a periodic health examination.
