In the past few years several studies have examined the role of two highly polymorphic immunogenetic systems, HLA (human leukocyte antigen) on chromosome 6 and Gm (genetic markers of IgG) on chromosome 14, in the pathogenesis of various autoimmune diseases. These studies fall in two categories: population studies and family studies. The former provide information on the "association" of the putative disease susceptibility locus (or loci) and the marker locus, whereas the latter furnish knowledge about the "linkage" relationship between the loci involved.
