The diagnostic and Therapeutic Criteria Committee of the American Rheumatism Association has called to our attention that articles on gout, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or systemic sclerosis all too frequently give no evidence that the studies they report have used published and widely accepted criteria for diagnosis or case classification. The Committee has estimated that as many as two thirds of papers in rheumatology journals have this fault. The need for such criteria is especially critical in rheumatology because cases of presumably different disorders may show overlapping case features.
