This is a compact, lucidly written handbook of the clinical laboratory changes that result from old age (over 60 years old) and multiple diseases. In general, the chapters by 18 contributors from the United Kingdom are well organized, nicely illustrated, and provide good coverage of available knowledge. My overall impression, based on my own experience as well as on this book, is that most laboratory test values are somewhat depressed by old age, and the response of the aged to disease is somewhat muted to a variable degree.
