Since the 1940s most medical students and graduate students in pharmacology have learned the basics of this discipline from the previous editions of this textbook. The current editors, along with an appropriate mix of 58 well-selected clinical and basic pharmacologists (including three Nobel Laureates), have updated and significantly changed the focus of this edition from animals to humans. The change to a greater clinical orientation is reflected in part by the significant increase in references from clinically oriented journals and data on humans rather than experimental animals.
