"Tell me, John, was it worth it?"
He moved his hand still paralyzed
Past his face, past his eyes
To where the hair was growing back
To the healing surgical flap.
"Let's get the bastard," he'd grinned so fast
A month ago, so long ago,
He'd been sure when I was not,
But melanoma the miser gave few options.
His eyes held mine so steadily,
The words were eager the words were ready,
But lips and tongue were slow to reply,
Words and wit left standing by.
His eyes now showed their deep fatigue.
A month ago, so long ago.
