In this age of computers, satellite communications, and supersonic travel, it becomes imperative for medical communities throughout the world to use a standardized nomenclature and a uniform system for classifying disease processes. In 1974, the World Health Organization established an International Collaborating Center for the Histologic Classification of Renal Diseases. Under the direction of Dr. Jacob Churg, one of the most respected nephropathologist in the world, pathologists and nephrologists from 17 countries have developed a classification of renal diseases that they hope will be used by all, particularly for international communication.
