To the editor: The article in the April issue on the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (1) was a timely and well-written review. We write to comment on an additional condition that may significantly affect the erythrocyte sedimentation rate in certain population groups.
To determine if obesity was associated with an increase in the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, we prospectively compared 12 patients who were approximately 45 kg (100 lbs) over their ideal body weight (determined by the Metropolitan Height and Weight tables) to 13 patients who were normal weight and otherwise matched for sex and age.
