Effective treatment for cytomegalovirus pneumonia, a major cause of mortality in marrow transplant patients, remains elusive. A new acyclic nucleoside, 9-[2-hydroxy-1-(hydroxy methyl) ethoxy methyl] guanine (DHPG; BW B759U, Burroughs-Wellcome, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina) has been shown to have both in-vitro and in-vivo activity against cytomegalovirus but did not improve survival when used to treat cytomegalovirus pneumonia in marrow transplant recipients, although it caused a significant reduction in the amount of virus in lung tissue (1).
