Twenty-one contributors provide basic and current information with clinical applicability for medical students and practitioners who want to learn about viral diseases; the result is a successful "small" book. Chapters on basic virology, host response, and pathology precede an excellent section on epidemiology. Of the remaining 11 chapters, those on infections of the fetus and newborn, new and emerging viral disease, and diagnostic virology are pithy, useful, and well balanced.
