Herrick first described sickle cell disease in 1910. Nobel Prize-winning research has elucidated the molecular basis of the disorder. Unfortunately, the pathogenesis of clinical manifestations and their treatment have been more resistant to understanding.
Dr. Serjeant has been a leader in trying to fill these gaps. He has critically studied sickle cell disease and its variants for 20 years in almost 3000 Jamaicans whose care he directs.
