In view of the vast scope now implied by "medicine," one can hardly fault the editors for what may look like skimpy treatment of any particular topic. Nevertheless, the narrow extent to which the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is covered looks inadequate in the face of the enormity of the problem. In general, the coverage this year is reasonable and responsive to clinicians' real needs.
