To the editor: In 1985, Hall and colleagues (1) reported on 14 patients in whom platelet counts after splenectomy followed a different pattern from those in patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura treated in the same way. This experience differs from our own.
In an analysis of 148 adults with immune thrombocytopenia (2), a subgroup of 8 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus responded to prednisone and subsequent splenectomy in a way that was indistinguishable from that of patients with the idiopathic variant.
