To the editor: There is a strong possibility that the use of pulmonary artery flow (Swan-Ganz) catheters in patients with acute myocardial infarction is associated with a high rate of excess mortality (mortality in excess of that caused by acute myocardial infarction without the use of the catheter). Gore and associates ( 1 ) examined the outcome in over 3000 patients with acute myocardial infarction in Worcester, Massachusetts. Patients in whom the catheter was used showed an approximately 100% increase in mortality as compared with patients in whom the catheter was not used.
