Epidemiologic studies of cancer incidence and mortality by specific sites provide investigators with important clues concerning targeting research into potential etiologies as well as cataloguing changes in survival patterns with time. Pickle and colleagues have updated an earlier volume by the same group that outlined cancer mortality in the United States from 1950 to 1969. Mortality data for the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) were collected from death certificates and age-adjusted mortality rates calculated for specific types of cancer. The data are presented both in tabular form, and as a series of color-coded maps showing time trends in mortality
