To the editor: The article by von Schacky (1) is welcome as there is widespread and perhaps uncritical enthusiasm for the prescription of marine omega-3 fatty acids for prophylaxis of atherosclerosis in humans. Human studies on fish consumption (2) and animal studies supporting the use of omega-3 fatty acids for prevention of atherosclerosis have largely focused their attention on the coronary arteries (3). However, the issue is more complex, and although coronary atherosclerosis may be favorably affected by consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, recent animal data (4) suggest that atherosclerotic changes at the carotid bifurcation are significantly greater in animals
to gain full access to the content and tools.
