Aortic catheter balloon valvuloplasty produces increases in aortic valve areas that are clinically effective (1-3). Mitral catheter balloon valvuloplasty, when done with the double-balloon technique (4, 5), can achieve increases in mitral valve areas similar to those obtained after open mitral commissurotomy (5, 6) and opens the mitral valve along the commissures (7). In patients with a small valve anulus, valve replacement with small prostheses may result in high residual gradients (8, 9).
