To the editor: Campling and colleagues (1) on the basis of a review of their own material, do not recommend bone marrow examination as part of the routine staging of small cell lung cancer. However, as treatment of this type of cancer improves, accurate staging may become more important. In the meantime, it should be kept in mind that a positive bone marrow specimen provides histologic documentation of disseminated disease. The other studies commonly used may provide radiographic or chemical evidence of disseminated disease but are subject to misinterpretation, overinterpretation, and so on.
