To the editor: A patient was recently seen in our occupational medicine clinic whose case illustrates a little-known effect of chronic benzene poisoning and emphasizes the continuing need for clinicians to improve their history taking concerning occupational and environmental exposures.
A 54-year-old woman was referred with a history of working in a handbag factory for 23 years and a chronic hematologic disease. In an unventilated room in the factory, she ran a cementing machine that glued felt inside handbags. The patient frequently used a cleaning solvent to wipe off excess glue and to clean the glue machine at the end
