Next November the American Board of Internal Medicine ABIM) will administer to qualified diplomates its first examination in critical care medicine. Certification of competence in critical care medicine is designed to improve the quality of medical care by recognizing excellence among internists who provide critical care. Certification in this field is not a requirement to provide critical care, and the Board's certificate does not confer privilege to practice.
Late in 1983 the ABIM withdrew from participation in a joint examination to be administered with its partners in anesthesiology, pediatrics, and surgery for two reasons: the Board could no longer endorse
