To the editor: Burke and Redfield (1) discuss the usefulness of periodic investigation of T-cell subsets for following the progress of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). These authors conclude that the single best measure of disease progression and prognosis is the absolute number of helper-inducer T cells in the peripheral blood. We disagree. Like others (2) we have not found the T4 subset and the T4/T8 ratio a useful tool for monitoring the evolution of the disease.
