The systems approach presented here is reminiscent of a medical school curriculum. Both medical and surgical aspects of the renal-urinary system are reviewed. The editors have combined the expertise of 21 authors with backgrounds in nephrology, urology, and emergency medicine. The 13 chapters cover a range of subjects from nephrology (evaluation of the azotemic patient, emergencies related to dialysis and transplantation, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, management of hypertension in the emergency room), to the strictly surgical topics (acute scrotal emergencies, urinary retention, urologic trauma) to issues where a clear dichotomy does not exist (urolithiasis, urinary tract infections).
