In 1986 geriatrics and gerontology have come of age. This has not been the case for long, however, and when I made the choice to join the field in the 1970s—a gradual process, by the way—my decision always seemed to prompt the question, "Geriatrics? But why?".
Therefore, being constantly reminded that those who asked wanted a concise answer, not a dissertation, preferably one that spoke to their value systems, I developed a series of answers. These answers seemed to satisfy those in the academic environment, both recently at Johns Hopkins and previously at The University of Washington.
