Systemic lupus erythematosus continues to intrigue clinicians and investigators as a model of autoimmunity. The multisystem nature of this entity, the plethora of immunologic and self-reactive abnormalities, and the availability of animal models make lupus an ideal model for study. In addition, the clinical consequences of the exaggerated immune responses continue to challenge clinicians who care for patients with lupus.
For many years, the definitive monograph on this disease was Lupus Erythematosus, first published by the late Dr. Dubois in 1966, with the last edition available in 1976. However, since then several new texts have appeared, including The Clinical Management
