Metabolic bone diseases such as osteoporosis have become increasingly prominent in internal medicine and specialty practice, in the literature, and in the lay press. This prominence reflects not only an aging population in whom such disorders are more prevalent, but also expanding scientific knowledge and general awareness of the importance of these conditions. The important advances in the understanding of the cellular and tissue phenomena that underlie these diseases owe much to the expertise developed in applying histologic techniques for the examination of mineralized bone.
