To the editor: The Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP) VII Syllabus (1) in the section on systemic lupus erythematosus on page 117 states that "Hemodialysis has little effect on the overall survival rate of patients with nephritis." Reference 31 (2) is the apparent source of this conclusion. The authors of that reference base this claim on the fact that in the second half of their study (1970 to 1976), when dialysis was generally more available, no decreases in deaths attributed to nephritis were noted.
