An anthology of 17 essays, some classic and some contemporary, that consider issues and solutions in the patient-physician relation, both personal and social. The selection aims to respond to the questions of proper "rules" for the relation, how it functions, its communications and their barriers, possibilities for research, and ideals for the relation. This anthology includes often cited but rarely read essays by L. J. Henderson, Talcott Parsons, Thomas S. Szasz, and Francis W. Peabody.
