In this issue, the Federated Council for Internal Medicine (FCIM) states its position on methods to enhance excellence in internal medicine through graduate training programs and the methods and principles by which they operate (1). With this goal of assuring quality care and preserving the professionalism of internal medicine, FCIM has appropriately chosen graduate medical education as its effector pathway. Recognizing the influence of its five member organizations, it proposes a major revision of the content, structure, and function of residencies in internal medicine and its subspecialties. The revision would directly relate to the work of the Residency Review Committee
