In May 1987 45 men and women concerned with, and experienced in, the teaching and practice of humane medicine met at the Wickenburg Inn, Wickenburg, Arizona to discuss present concepts of medical practice, defects in medical care as seen by patients, and the obstacles in our system of medical education to training physicians to be more competent in providing more thoughtful, more sensitive, more responsive care. The discussions were digested and summarized by Dr. White. The essence of views developed is that contemporary medical education is failing to educate in needed ways and the possibilities for change seem slender. The
