Riggs and Wahner (1), Notelovitz (2), and Mazess (3) have presented their views on the uses of bone mineral densitometry. These authors have protested that the position of the Health and Public Policy Committee on bone mineral densitometry for screening or diagnosis (4) is too conservative. In formulating recommendations, the American College of Physicians (ACP) relies on published data and on an assessment of the quality of those data regarding the effect of a technology on the outcomes of patients, on diagnostic and therapeutic plans, and on other endpoints. We recognize that this approach will lead to more conservative conclusions
