To the Editor: We are studying the possible role of specific viruses in the chronic fatigue syndrome, an illness for which criteria were recently outlined (1). We summarize the results of a serologic study designed to ascertain whether previous infection with Inoue-Melnick virus is a prominent feature of our patients with the chronic fatigue syndrome and, moreover, whether serologic reactivity to the virus is synonymous with reactivity to herpesviruses, including human herpesvirus type 6 (2).
The Inoue-Melnick virus is not well defined. It resembles the herpesviruses in size, DNA content, sensitivity to organic solvents, and susceptibility to inhibition by drugs
