We live in an age where there is increasingly aggressive interventional therapy directed at the patients for whom we care. Every patient is subjected to multiple organ testing with various sophisticated and all too often expensive laboratory and imaging techniques. Somehow there seems to be less and less time and effort devoted to careful observation of the patient, his or her physical findings, and the taking of a careful, thoughtful history. It is refreshing, therefore, to review a book on Maimonides and his comments on the aphorisms of Hippocrates.
