Our understanding of hematopoiesis has undergone monumental leaps in the last 20 years. Many of these leaps can be ascribed to two major advances in technology. Clonogenic assays allowed us to begin to identify hematopoietic stem cells and their growth factors (for example, colony stimulating factors). Molecular biological techniques have allowed us to clone and synthesize hematopoietic growth factors: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) induces very early hematopoietic stem cells into active proliferation; IL-1 may have similar functions; IL-3 stimulates proliferation of very early myeloid stem cells and their more mature progeny including granulocytes, macrophages, erythrocytes, and megakaryocytes; granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor stimulates
