The traditional approach to pulmonary disease has been physiologic, emphasizing disturbances in mechanical properties and gas exchange. Over the past 15 years, advances in cell biology and immunology as applied to the lung have led to an important new approach that has focused on the immune function of the lung and its alteration in various diseases. Daniele and his contributors have made the immunologic aspects of normal lung function and disease states the framework of this book, and present the material in a comprehensive, authoritative, and eminently readable way.
