To the Editor: The review by Drs. Greenland and Chu (1) on cardiac rehabilitation services and the accompanying position paper (2) developed by the Health and Policy Committee, American College of Physicians base their discussions of program components on a definition of cardiac rehabilitation that focuses on the restorative function of this intervention. Although programs for cardiac rehabilitation were originally based on a restorative model of care (3), subsequent epidemiologic research identifying specific risk factors associated with the development of coronary artery disease and the demonstration that the modification of those risk factors could alter cardiovascular morbidity and mortality (4)
