A compact but wide-scope manual with concise definitions of diseases and concise statements on diagnostic features and desirable investigations. The coverage of some topics is supported by tables. Each entry carries a short list of selected references. Some entries are so brief as to be useless: For example, the entire entry for priapism reads "Priapism is a persistent, painful penile erection unrelated to sexual disease," which is followed by six references. Organized as it is by disease rather than by presentation, this manual appears to add nothing to standard textbooks of internal medicine and its subspecialties. (EJH)
