To the Editors: The American College of Physicians is to be roundly applauded and supported for the courageous leadership displayed in its position paper on access to health care (1). A prestigious medical society took the initiative and made recommendations demonstrating that physicians can participate actively and creatively in reasonable change.
Historically, the medical profession has taken a reactive, not pro-active, stance toward initiatives in health care policy. We have missed many opportunities to show progressive leadership and have disappointed and frustrated those both inside and outside the profession who looked to us for necessary innovations.
